Accelerated therapy for faster change.

JUMP-START THE HEALING PROCESS

IN A FEW HOURS OR DAYS INSTEAD OF MONTHS OR YEARS

Therapy intensives are an alternative to traditional weekly therapy. Instead of meeting routinely for 50 minutes once a week for an indefinite amount of time, intensives provide highly-focused, unhurried time for you to address a specific concern or goal.

A therapy intensive can look like a 3-hour session in one day or 3-hour sessions over several consecutive days. This lets us dive deeper into the therapeutic process without interruption, which can lead to faster relief.

Intensives can be more efficient because they allow targeted, concentrated focus on an issue. Ultimately, they may be a more cost-effective path for some folks as they aren’t in therapy for months or years, saving on the cost of regular travel, childcare, or time off.

Intensive trauma therapy using EMDR is well-suited for this format. Couples may also seek out intensives when they’re dealing with acute issues and want to begin working toward increased communication, understanding, and repair.

imagine what could be possible...

TRADITIONAL THERAPY vs. THERAPY INTENSIVE

Most people are familiar with weekly or biweekly 50-minute therapy sessions. A typical session can involve 5-10 minutes of opening and closing each time, leaving only about 35 minutes of processing time.

Many people find that’s just not enough time in one sitting.

A therapy intensive allows anywhere from 3 hours on one day to 9 hours over three days to dive deeply into the therapeutic work to address targeted goals without the same time constraint and challenge of keeping up momentum. No checking in or having to recap recent events or new issues each week between sessions. Because of this, a 3-hour intensive can equate to about 5-6 hours of weekly therapy.

Scheduling may also be more convenient. No need to regularly schedule around and take time away from work or family commitments each week.

HOW IT WORKS

What does a therapy intensive include?

1. PRE-INTENSIVE

INTERVIEW

In this 90-minute session, we’ll determine your goal(s) for the intensive and prepare for it. We’ll look at your support system, stressors, and coping strategies. If we’re planning for an EMDR therapy intensive, we’ll get clear on identifying which painful memories, beliefs, emotions, and/or images you’d like to get relief from.

If we’ll be working on developing skills, we’ll discuss which issues are causing you the most difficulty and identify what is most needed to cope in a healthier way. This session is like map-making to plan the direction you want to go.

2. CUSTOM

TREATMENT WORKBOOK

Before your intensive, you’ll receive a personalized workbook with assessments and activities to help us prepare. Your workbook also provides a place for you to record progress toward your treatment goals.

3. personalized

TREATMENT PROGRAM

Intensives range from one, three-hour session to 3 hours each day for 3 days. Your intensive will include targeted treatment and resourcing activities like guided imagery, movement,  meditation, and a self-care plan – tailored to you. Ultimately, our goal is to reduce the sting of the painful stuff and increase the feel-good of the good stuff.

4. Post-intensive

INTERVIEW

In this 90-minute session, we’ll process your intensive experience. We’ll discuss insights you gained and reflect on aspects that were most meaningful to you. We’ll look at areas of relief or change, as well as next steps for infusing what you gained into your life for ongoing healing.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do I have to share explicit details about traumatic or distressing experiences?

No. One of the wonderful aspects of EMDR therapy is that you don’t have to share explicit details about painful experiences to get relief from them. I tailor our work to suit your needs and create an environment that feels safe so you can work toward healing.

Where are intensives held?

Therapy intensives can take place in person at the office in downtown Leesburg or virtually for anyone physically located within Virginia.

If possible, I recommend treating your intensive like a personal retreat, allowing yourself unscheduled free time and/or to engage in scheduled self-care activities (e.g., walking at the park, practicing yoga, or getting a massage).

Do you guarantee a certain outcome?

While I wish that I could do that, I can’t (nor would I trust someone who does). That said, I will meet you where you are and together we’ll work on the piece of the metaphorical puzzle you’re struggling with. We’ll attend to whatever needs to be attended to while we are together.

By working in the intensive format, we significantly accelerate the therapy process.

Does insurance cover intensive therapy?

The short answer – it depends. Some insurance plans may reimburse a portion of the intensive cost. Please note: insurance companies require a diagnosis code as justification for treatment. I recommend calling your insurance provider to get details about your specific plan. I’m happy to provide additional information to guide you with this process.
